It should be designed and structured in a way that it can help the driver enjoy peaceful drive.rnrnIf you look back to the Indian car industry, you will find that the old car models were equipped with simple steering mechanism that is controlled by a complex steering system. The steering wheel is only a support to move the front axle and the major weight is placed on the rear axle.rnrnWith a host of innovations and advancements in the car market, the steering wheel also became complex and advanced to deliver better levels of safety and comfort.rnrnThe two basic types of modern car steering wheel are explained below:rnrnStandard or Recirculating Ball SteeringrnrnThis is one of the most common types of steering system used in SUVs. In this system, the steering wheel is attached through the steering column to the steering box that turns the rotation of the wheel.rnrnThe pitman arm is linked to the output shaft which in turn connects the steering box to the steering gear. The centre link of the system is connected at one end to the pitman arm and at the other to the idler arm. This linkage keeps the movement of left and right wheels in synchronization.rnrnThe inner tie rod linked to the each end of the centre link and provides pivot points for the steering gear. Further to that the outer tie rod and the inner tie rod are linked through adjustment sleeve that ensures adjustment when front car wheels are aligned. One end of the outer tie rod connected to the steering knuckle supports the movement of front wheels.rnrnRack and Pinion SteeringrnrnThe rack and pinion steering system combines the steering box and the centre link. Then, the steering wheels links directly to the rack through the steering column. Inside the steering rack is the pinion gear that moves the toothed piston that actually moves the steering gear.rnrnOne end of the inner tie rod ends is connected to the toothed piston and other end to the outer tie rod. The inner tie rod is threaded onto the outer to ensure rotation in order to make adjustments during alignment.rnrnThe key advantage of rack and pinion steering is that it’s more precise and more responsive than the recirculating steering system. rn
